That Top Chef-level of control isn’t the only reason people love propane grills. People also love them because they are easy to care for. No ash, no charcoal, no mess! That doesn’t mean they don’t require a little maintenance. Keeping your grill clean will ensure great-tasting food, reduce sticking, and prevent grease and food residue buildup that can lead to flare-ups or even food-borne illness when bacteria forms in old grease and food left on the grill.
It’s easy to keep your grill ready to go. Use a wire- or nylon-bristle brush to scrub the grates clean while you’re preheating your grill, and use a spatula or brush to scrape off clumps of food after you’re finished cooking. It’s also a good idea to empty the drip pan regularly and sweep crumbs and debris out of the cooking chamber as necessary.
At the end of the season before you put it away, and maybe once mid-summer, you should give your propane grill a more thorough cleaning. Just plan to do it on a day you aren’t going to use it to cook, and make sure your grill is completely cool. It’s not hard to deep-clean your grill. Here’s how:
Start by gathering your supplies. You’ll need a couple of big buckets, a wire-bristle brush or stiff nylon-bristle brush, nylon scrubbing pads, dishwashing soap, and some clean rags. Make a solution of equal parts white vinegar and water in a spray bottle.
When you’re done, you can reassemble your grill and stash it away for the season. Or, if you’re still in grilling season, reconnect the propane cylinder and let everything dry completely before you grill.
You can make firing up the grill even easier by upgrading to a built-in grill. When your grill is connected to your home’s main propane supply, you never have to think about swapping out cylinders or realizing your tank is empty just as your guests start to arrive.
