Four problems you could experience with a propane tankless water heater

tankless water heaterA propane tankless water heater is a great option for your home: it’s super efficient, provides nearly unlimited hot water (if it is sized properly), and offers a lot more placement flexibility (it can even be mounted in a crawl space!). They also last longer than a conventional water heater – about 18 years, compared to about 10 to 12 for storage-type water heaters.

But just because a tankless water heater lasts longer and performs better than a conventional water heater, it doesn’t mean that it never needs attention from a water heater repair specialist.

Here are four common things that can go wrong with your tankless water heater:

  • Burner trouble – A gas-powered tankless system uses burners to heat water on demand – burners that can become dirty and clogged. If you notice a drop in hot water temperature in your house, a clogged burner could be the cause.
  • Corrosion – Metal and water don’t mix well, which is one of the main reasons why conventional (storage-type) water heaters rarely last more than a dozen years. While tankless water heaters are less likely to corrode than conventional models, they are not entirely immune to problems that can result from leaky pipes – which is why it’s so important to take care of leaks quickly!
  • Hard water problems – If left untreated, mineral deposits will narrow your pipes, leading to a potential drop in water pressure. Eventually, hot water will stop flowing altogether.
  • Poor venting – Like any appliance that burns fuel, a propane gas water heater must vent out harmful fumes. Besides creating carbon monoxide risks, improper ventilation will also cause acid condensation to form in the heat exchanger, which will quickly ruin it.

Like problems with any fuel burning equipment, tankless propane water heater troubles should be tackled by a professional; if you’re experiencing any these or any other signs of tankless trouble, contact us for service. We’ll get your equipment repaired quickly and correctly – and if you can’t, we have plenty of options available for a top-quality propane water heater upgrade.
