How Much Propane To Expect To Use This Summer

Posted: June 15, 2020

Just because you’re not running your furnace, boiler, space heaters, or fireplace during the summer, it doesn’t mean your propane will slow to a trickle.

summer propane use north carolinaIn fact, there are plenty of propane appliances that will continue to get a workout during the late spring and summer months: propane water heaters, for example, get lots of use this time of year (especially with all of us home as often as we are now). Propane outdoor living equipment such as patio heaters, propane gas grills and propane pool heaters can also get heavy use.

If you get a propane bill that’s higher than expected this summer, you might assume you have a propane leak somewhere in your system. If that’s true, be sure to follow propane safety instructions to rule out the problem.

Approximating Propane Use

But most of the time, you won’t have a leak – you just used more propane than you thought you would. Keep these usage rates in mind when you’re estimating the amount of propane you’ll need in the coming months (all values approximate):

  • Pool Heater (average size about 21,000 gallons): – 4 gallons/hour
  • Gas cooktop/range @ 65,000 BTU/hour = 5 to 10 gallons per month
  • Built-in propane grill (four-burner) – .75 gallons/hour (all burners on medium)
  • Tankless water heater @40,000 BTU/hour = 1.5 gallons per day
  • Gas clothes dryer @ 35,000 BTU/hr = less than one gallon per day when in operation

As you can see, propane gallon totals will sneak up on you!
